Frequently Asked Questions

Below, you will find answers to frequently asked questions about our ISO 17025 consulting services.

Q: How long does it take to achieve ISO 17025 accreditation?

A: Timelines vary based on your lab’s current status, but we provide an efficient path to compliance.

In most cases, you can expect to get your accreditation within 4 to 6 months. This includes time to develop your quality management system, train personnel, prepare required records, submit your application, prepare for the assessment, and satisfactorily complete your assessment.

Some projects may take longer. We will give you an estimated timeline as part of our consultation.

Q: What accreditation body do you recommend?

A: Typically, we recommend an accreditation body that is available in your country and a signatory to the ILAC-MRA. If more than one accreditation body is available, we will provide you a list and let you know the pros and cons of each one so you can pick the body that is best for your organization.

Q: Which accreditation body is the best?

A: Every accreditation body has its pros and cons. The accreditation body that is best for you will vary based on several factors, including your: type of laboratory, organization or business goals, location, industry, customers, and competitors.

There is a lot to consider. We would be happy to discuss it with you.

Which accreditation bodies have you worked with?

A: We work with many accreditation bodies across the globe. Here the most common accreditation bodies we routinely work with:

North America

Europe

Oceania

Asia/Middle East

Africa

Q: What is the ILAC-MRA?

A: It is a mutual recognition arrangement (MRA) that lists the accreditation bodies that signed and have been peer evaluated to demonstrate their competence to meet the requirements of ISO/IEC 17011. As a result, the signatories to the ILAC MRA agree to mutually accept the results of each other’s accredited organizations (i.e. laboratories).

This means that if you get your accreditation through a signatory to the ILAC MRA, then your accredited test or calibration results will be accepted by other signatories to the ILAC MRA even though the accreditation body may be in a different country or continent.

Learn more about the ILAC MRA by visiting the ILAC website.

Q: Can we use our ISO 9001 manual to cover ISO 17025, section 8?

A: Yes, you can. However, be careful! It does not always workout the way you think for the following reasons:

  • You will be audited to ISO/IEC 17025 section 8 (Option A), not ISO 9001,
  • The terminology used in ISO 17025 and ISO 9001 are not the same, and
  • ISO 9001 does not meet all the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025, section 8. So, will need to modify your ISO 9001 manual. This may cause issues with your ISO 9001 quality manager and(or) auditors.

Make sure to compare ISO 9001 and ISO 17025, before deciding how you want to proceed.

Q: Can you help with accreditation body audits?

A: Yes! We prepare labs for ISO/IEC 17025 audits, ensuring they meet all requirements before the assessment.

Plus, we will support you during the audit (if you need it).

Q: Can we hire you to perform our internal audits each year?

A: Yes! We can perform your internal audits each year. We conduct internal audits in accordance with ISO 19011 performing both horizontal audits (i.e. examine policies, procedures, and records, including how it’s implemented across the organization) and vertical audits (i.e. witnessing all processes and activities from start to finish).

Some customers request we only perform the horizontal audit and leave the vertical audit to them. That is okay with us. It is completely up you. We are here to help you.

Q: Do you perform gap analysis for ISO/IEC 17025?

A: Yes! We perform gap analysis for laboratories seeking ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. If you have an existing quality management system and want to know which areas are missing or not meeting requirements, contact us to schedule a consultation.

Q: Do you subcontract any of your work?

A: No. We do not subtract any work. Instead, we refer.

If we are unable to help you, we will refer you to a consultant or company that can.

We have a list of trusted consultants and companies that we refer to.

What do you need (from me) to estimate uncertainty?

First, I collect your Type A and calibration history data. Next, I analyze that data to determine the magnitude of uncertainty. Then, I calculate the uncertainty and issue a report of my findings.

To estimate uncertainty, we need to collect the following information from you:

  1. Equipment calibration reports,
  2. Standards certificates of analysis,
  3. Repeatability and reproducibility test results,
  4. Copies of your methods/procedures, and
  5. Information about environmental conditions.

This list covers most uncertainty analyses, but may differ based on your testing or calibration activities.
