Description of the Course
Learn how to estimate uncertainty in chemistry for ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited testing labs. This course is best suited for chemical testing labs that use HPLCs, GCs, and MS. The processes taught in this course are based on the JCGM 100:2008 (GUM) guide, the EURACHEM QUAM:2012 guide, and ISOBudgets procedures. This course includes 17 lecture videos, 11 demonstration videos, PowerPoint slides, and an Excel uncertainty calculator. It requires 11 hours to complete the course and a training certificate will be issued upon completion of the course.

Just watch the videos, follow the instructions given in the demonstration, and start estimating uncertainty.

  1. Excellent - well worth both the money and time.

    I needed to develop a better understanding of expanded uncertainties and how to build error budgets. Most of the material or classes that I found did not contain enough rigor or examples to cover our products and processes; and as such, were of limited value. The agenda for this class focused on the chemical laboratory and included some of the analytical equipment we use, so I thought I’d give it a try. The resource guides and calculators saved me significant hours. The time savings alone justified the course fee. The course is well designed; builds in a logical format, is clear and easy to understand. The demos re-enforced the material covered. Rick is a good instructor and sticks to the material – he doesn’t wander off on tangents and confuse you. We have several product lines including gas calibration standards and chemical analysis of low level impurities in corrosive gases – which makes developing an error budget challenging. This course gave me several significant angles to pursue and the take away format will be put to use immediately. I also liked that this course was divided up into “bite sized pieces” which greatly improved my retention of the material. It was also way cheaper than taking a weekend course at PittCon.

    Rick covers his bases quite well. A good review from the old propagation of error days in physical chemistry and some new to me statistical modeling for uncertainties. Well worth the time and money. David

    It was most unusual experience, normally the persons seeking to calculate the Uncertainty run after the excel sheet formula and start calculating the uncertainty. But here the role of analyst is exploited, what are the different causes for variations are possible? shown very nicely. In fact this should be the real job of Analysts.

    Even the concept of repeatability and reproducibility plays very important role in ascertaining the uncertainty of measurement. Consideration of sources of uncertainty resolution was never expected, great to know about these simple simple but important factors. The stability consideration for the equipment and purity of CRMs over a period of its effective life also shown very nicely and calculated UOM by considering the CRMs stability. The drift and bias were also considered judiciously. Thank you Mr Rick Hogan Sir for having such different angle and importance of Analysts besides the Statistician.
    Besides the training support of Mr Hogan over a long period is one of the best face of the program which will be very useful for the persons having volatile understanding about this very important aspects of analysis. .

    I am not a Laboratory person, but a Software Consultant, working in LIMS industry, was looking to get a detailed course on improving my understanding on MoU, This is exactly what this course provided to me. Now I understand Uncertainty better.     I inherited the QAQC role in an accredited laboratory, and wanted to make sure I had a good grasp on the basics of uncertainty. This course is succinct, detailed, and broken into manageable modules that you can work through at your own pace. Being able to review modules as needed is an advantage. The cost is well worth avoiding travel expenses, and information overload, making it an easy sell to my manager, and value added to our business.

    I enjoyed the course and all the demos. The more examples I see, the better. Richard does a great job of explaining things. He will answer most if not all your questions and is very helpful.

    I concur with all the comments that were made above.

    One thing I do suggest is an outline/table of content so you know in the future which lesson covers what topic if case you want to review the PowerPoint Slides.

  9. My opinion of the "How to Calculate Measurement Uncertainty in Chemistry per EURACHEM/CITAC CG4 Guide" class.

    The lessons are very straightforward. That is, they are technically appropriate simplifications of the GUM’s rather complex narratives and mathematical representations. The detailed demos/exercises are applicable and very useful specifically to non-technical students. In general, the class warrants a time reduction in the learning process, significantly, for novices and for those who are merely recalling the pertinent statistical practices. On top of it, Rick is always on his toes to respond to relevant inquiries.
